UAE Balances Diplomacy With Iran and Military Ties With US and Israel

Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is actively working to ease tensions with Iran while simultaneously deepening its military and security cooperation with the United States and Israel. This strategic approach aims to safeguard its economic and security interests amid escalating regional tensions. According to Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, UAE President Sheikh Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan has designated three of his brothers-Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan-to manage diplomatic engagements with Tehran. This initiative seeks to alleviate tensions through diplomatic channels, illustrated by recent communications between UAE officials and Iranian leaders. The UAE's diplomatic efforts intensified following a memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington on June 12, aiming to stabilize the region after a fragile cease-fire between Iran and the United State s. However, recent missile and drone attacks launched by Iran against several Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have tested the UAE's strategy to avoid direct military confrontation with Tehran. In addition to diplomatic maneuvers, the UAE has taken actions impacting its large Iranian community. During the conflict, it suspended residency permits for approximately 20,000 Iranian residents outside the country. Some permits have since been reactivated, although many are still pending, and tourist visas for Iranians remain unavailable. The UAE's approach is also driven by economic imperatives, especially in Dubai, where a significant Iranian population contributes to its status as a trade and re-export hub. A Dubai official emphasized the economic benefits of maintaining ties with Iran, noting the challenges of substituting Iranian goods, which range from essential to luxury items like tomatoes and caviar. Economic pressures have been compounded by the conflict between Iran, the United States, an d Israel, leading to inflation in the UAE. Despite measures to control prices, the crisis around the Strait of Hormuz has driven costs higher. Iranian goods continue to enter the UAE through alternative routes, reflecting the resilience of trade relations amidst geopolitical tensions. The UAE claims to have intercepted most of the approximately 3,000 missile and drone attacks from Iran during the initial conflict phase, which has led to a more assertive stance towards Tehran. Reports suggest UAE participation in retaliatory measures against Iran. The Financial Times characterizes the UAE's strategy as a bold gamble, balancing reactivation of diplomatic and economic channels with Iran while strengthening military ties with Israel and the United States. For Abu Dhabi, this reflects a careful navigation of its reliance on Western security alliances and the economic necessity of maintaining practical relations with its powerful Gulf neighbor.
