Libreville: Gabon recently announced its decision to unilaterally terminate the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA) signed with the European Union in 2007. This move is part of the Gabonese government’s strategy to enhance its economic sovereignty and develop a stronger local tuna industry.

According to Emirates News Agency, the termination of the agreement was approved by the Council of Ministers. The Gabonese government views the current agreement as ‘deeply unbalanced,’ highlighting that the revenue generated does not adequately compensate for the true value of catches, the costs associated with monitoring and control, or the losses due to the absence of local processing.

Gabonese authorities have stated that the government’s new approach focuses on strengthening fisheries governance, protecting the marine environment, and supporting job creation and activities within the fisheries sector.
